Those overhauling their properties with a view to selling them in the future should use neutral shades in areas such as bedrooms, one expert advises.

According to director of the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC) Andrew Leech, “you’ve got to be careful where you go with innovation, because you can innovate in the wrong direction and end up doing something which is completely wrong”.

He explained that in terms of bedroom furniture and home design, “neutral is best” when it comes to selling a house so that anyone walking through the door can respond to it on their own terms.

Mr Leech’s comments come after a recent study by Bosch Power Tools indicated that 69 per cent of women in the UK have undertaken repairs and improvements in their homes in order to save cash.

He suggested that both male and female homeowners have “equal responsibility” for carrying out DIY work and claimed that competency at such tasks is “becoming a lost art”.
